Townsfolk were shocked when ancient woodland on Frodsham Hill was put on the open market. Thanks to a £75,000 donation from Vale Royal Borough Council the 26-acre wood is close to being saved.
The Woodland Trust, the UK's leading woodland conservation charity, thrashed out a rescue plan at an emergency public meeting called by Frodsham Town Council. The trust then offered the full asking price for the wood.
This successful bid triggered a frantic fundraising campaign to net the cash by the end of this month, plus a further £50,000 to cover management costs.
Residents dug deep into their own pockets and have already raised more than £20,000. A further £20,000 has been promised by Mersey Forest and the Sandstone Ridge ECOnet Partnership.
Generations of residents have enjoyed free access to the scenic site and families feared large chunks could be ruined if it fell into the wrong hands.
